Wales
Allergy-friendly restaurants in Cardiff
In Wales a food business has to display its hygiene rating. That sticker is one of the first things you see in Cardiff, and it is easy to read it as a safety mark for allergies. It is a hygiene score. The allergen question is separate.
The sticker is compulsory, and it is still hygiene
Wales requires food businesses to display their food hygiene rating. In Cardiff you should see the 0 to 5 sticker more reliably than in an English city, where display is voluntary. A 5 is the top hygiene score. It says nothing about peanut, mustard, gluten, milk or the rest of the 14 allergens.
SafePlate can show the Food Standards Agency rating when a listing matches. Keep it in that role. The Allergy Confidence Score is only shown when a menu or a visitor note mentions the food you avoid. Otherwise it stays Unknown, including for a place with a perfect hygiene sticker.
Late-night streets and bakery counters
Caroline Street is known for late-night takeaways. Service is fast, fryers are often shared, and midnight is a poor moment to discover that nobody can check a sauce. If you need a careful answer, earlier in the evening is an easier conversation. That is practical timing, not a verdict on any shop on the street.
Bakery counters, including stalls selling traditional Welsh cakes, often work with wheat flour, butter and egg. Recipes differ, including gluten-free or dairy-free batches, so ask the counter in front of you rather than assuming the traditional formula. Some Cardiff menus are in Welsh and English. Read both if you can, and hand over a written card so a word you do not know is not the only warning.
The same 14 allergens, in Wales
Allergen information law applies in Wales, and Natasha’s Law has required full ingredient labelling on prepacked-for-direct-sale food since 1 October 2021. A sandwich packed in the cafe for the fridge needs that label. A meal cooked to order needs the business to tell you about the 14 allergens, in writing or out loud.
Cardiff Bay, Canton, Pontcanna and the centre are different pockets of restaurants. Search Cardiff to see places, then ask the one you choose. The city guide does not name venues as suitable, because suitability is the kitchen’s answer on the day.
Shared Regulatory Services, based in Barry
Food hygiene and food standards for Cardiff are carried out by Shared Regulatory Services, which also covers Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan. It is not a Cardiff-only office. The contact published by the service is 0300 123 6696, Civic Offices, Holton Road, Barry, CF63 4RU. The Food Standards Agency’s Cardiff ratings page lists FoodSafetyCardiff-SRSWales@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk. The service’s food pages include composition and labelling, including allergens, as well as hygiene complaints. Newport is a different council.
Wales requires the 0 to 5 hygiene rating to be displayed. A 5 on a Cardiff door is that legal sticker. It is still a hygiene score. Cardiff Central station, Cardiff Bay and Caroline Street are in the city. A business in Barry is the Vale of Glamorgan: the same shared service, a different area on the ratings site.
Call 999 for anaphylaxis. The main accident and emergency department is at the University Hospital of Wales in Heath. Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales is on the same site. I could not verify a Cardiff allergy support group with its own public page. Anaphylaxis UK and Allergy UK are the national charities.
What to ask in Cardiff
- I can see the hygiene rating. Separately, is there peanut, mustard or my other foods in this dish?
- What else is fried in this oil, especially if I am eating late and the counter is rushed?
- Does the bakery item contain wheat, butter or egg, or is this a batch made without them?
- Can I read the ingredients if this was packed earlier?
- Please check the Welsh and English menu wording against what the kitchen used, if both are on the board.
Search Cardiff
Search Cardiff, then read any hygiene rating as hygiene. Ask the kitchen about allergens before you order.
Questions people ask
The window in Cardiff shows a 5. Does that mean I can eat there?
It means the hygiene rating is the top score, and in Wales that rating has to be displayed. Allergens are a separate system. Ask the kitchen about your foods and confirm the dish before you order.
Are allergen rules different in Wales?
The 14 allergens apply, and prepacked-for-direct-sale food needs full ingredient labelling with allergens emphasised. Made-to-order food still needs allergen information from the business. The distinctive local point is the compulsory hygiene sticker, which still does not cover allergies.
How do I search Cardiff?
Set your profile, then search Cardiff. Results are restaurants, cafes and pubs from OpenStreetMap. A displayed hygiene rating may also appear. Neither one certifies the meal.
Set up your foods before you search. This is not medical advice. Confirm the meal with the kitchen. If you think someone is having anaphylaxis, call 999.
