Allergy-friendly restaurants in Nottingham
Nottingham’s restaurants include the city centre, Hockley and the streets around two universities. A kitchen that suited a friend last year may have a new team this term. Ask again, about this visit’s menu.
Term time changes the team
Nottingham has the city centre, the independent streets around Hockley, and a large student population in areas such as Lenton. Restaurants near universities often change staff between academic years. A meal that worked for someone in June needs a fresh check in October. The recipe may be the same and the person answering may not know it yet.
Ask them to ask the kitchen. Allergen information has to be accurate whether the server is new or not. A guessed “it should be fine” is a reason to pause.
Food courts and cooked-to-order counters
In a centre such as the Victoria Centre, a sandwich packed on site for a grab-and-go fridge is the kind of food Natasha’s Law was written for. The label should list ingredients and emphasise the 14 allergens. A wok, grill or pizza cooked after you order is not that category. You need an answer from that counter about peanut, sesame, mustard, gluten, soya or whatever you avoid, including the oil and the sauce.
East and South East Asian cooking, which you will find around the city, often uses peanut, sesame and soy sauce. Soy sauce usually contains wheat as well as soya. Pub menus add mustard and gluten in different places. Ask about the cuisine you are actually ordering, not about restaurants in general.
Voluntary stickers, unknown scores
Nottingham is in England. The hygiene rating is 0 to 5 and the sticker does not have to be in the window. SafePlate shows a Food Standards Agency rating when the listing matches. A strong rating can sit next to an Unknown allergy score. That combination is normal, because the two numbers measure different things.
Search Nottingham once peanuts, mustard and your other foods are on your profile. Chris Faulkes built SafePlate because he is anaphylactic to peanuts and severely allergic to mustard. The site still does not certify a Nottingham restaurant as safe for those foods, or for any others.
One city team for hygiene and for allergens
Nottingham City Council’s Food Safety and Standards team covers both hygiene inspections and food standards, including allergens. That is different from cities that split the work. The council’s 2025 food service plan and its food factsheet give the email food.enforcement@nottinghamcity.gov.uk, the postal address Loxley House, Station Street, NG2 3NG, and an out-of-hours emergency number, 0115 915 2222. Hygiene problems in food premises can also be reported on the council’s report-it page.
Nottingham station and the NET tram stay mostly in the city through Hockley and the centre. Lenton and University Park are in the city. West Bridgford, across the Trent, is Rushcliffe. Beeston is Broxtowe. A student meal on the wrong side of that boundary is a different environmental health team. The city’s own plan says it adopted the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme in March 2012 and that display of the sticker is encouraged, not that England has made display compulsory.
Call 999 for anaphylaxis. The accident and emergency department is at the Queen’s Medical Centre, next to the university. Nottingham City Hospital, in the north of the city, is not that department. I could not verify a Nottingham allergy support group. Anaphylaxis UK and Allergy UK are national.
What to ask in Nottingham
- Are you certain about the ingredients, or do you need to ask the kitchen?
- Is this packed for the fridge, with an ingredients list, or cooked to order?
- Is there peanut, sesame, soy sauce or mustard in this dish or the oil?
- Does the soy sauce or the batter contain wheat?
- Has the recipe or the supplier changed since the menu was printed?

Questions people ask
Is a food-court sandwich in Nottingham covered by Natasha’s Law?
If it was packed on the same premises before you chose it, yes. It needs a full ingredients list with the 14 allergens emphasised. A meal cooked after you order needs allergen information too, but that can be given by staff rather than printed on a pack.
Why can a place show a hygiene rating and an Unknown allergy score?
The hygiene rating comes from the inspection scheme. The allergy score is only calculated when SafePlate has a menu or a visitor note about that food. No note means Unknown, which is more honest than a guessed number.
How do I search Nottingham?
Set your foods, including peanut and mustard if you avoid them, then search Nottingham. The results are a map of restaurants, cafes and pubs, not a list of approved venues.
Set up your foods before you search. This is not medical advice. Confirm the meal with the kitchen. If you think someone is having anaphylaxis, call 999.
