Allergy-friendly restaurants in Leeds
Leeds mixes market counters, pub roasts and a large student population. A roast is several foods, not one plate, and the person taking the order may not be the person who made the gravy. Ask them to check.
A roast is several foods
Leeds has Kirkgate Market, a busy centre and neighbourhoods such as Headingley. A Sunday roast or a pub plate is not one ingredient. Gravy may contain wheat, celery and milk. Yorkshire pudding is a batter of wheat, egg and milk. The meat can be the simplest thing on the plate. Ask about the parts, especially the gravy, the pudding and anything fried.
Mustard belongs in that conversation too. The dab of English mustard on the side is obvious. Mustard powder in a sausage, a dressing or a glaze is not. Say mustard by name if you need it kept out. SafePlate’s founder, Chris Faulkes, is severely allergic to mustard, which is why the site treats it as a full allergen rather than a condiment. That is context for the product. It does not make any Leeds kitchen suitable.
New staff still have to find out
Headingley and the other student areas have a lot of restaurants with high staff turnover. The person on the floor on a Friday may have started this week. “I think it’s fine” is not a check. Ask them to ask the kitchen, and wait for the answer that comes back.
The same applies at market counters and fried-chicken or chip shops. Shared fryers move gluten, fish and other foods between portions. Ask what the oil is used for today.
Packed sandwiches and cooked plates
A sandwich packed on site for a fridge is prepacked for direct sale. Natasha’s Law says the label needs the full ingredients, with the 14 allergens emphasised. A plate cooked after you order needs an allergen answer as well, from the menu or from staff who can get accurate information.
Leeds is in England, so the hygiene sticker runs from 0 to 5 and does not have to be displayed. If SafePlate shows a Food Standards Agency rating, keep it in the hygiene column. Search Leeds once your profile is set. Unknown allergy scores mean you still need the kitchen.
Leeds splits hygiene visits from allergen labelling
Leeds City Council environmental health takes food safety complaints about restaurants, cafes, takeaways and shops. The phone number on the council page is 0113 222 4444, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, except Wednesdays when the lines open at 10am. There is also an online form. The council says it does not visit every business after a complaint. It assesses the risk and may deal with the point at the next planned inspection. It does not pass your details to the business.
The same council’s business pages send questions about ingredients, allergens, shelf life and labelling to Trading Standards, while hygiene inspections sit with environmental health. That split is easy to miss. A dirty kitchen and a menu that will not say whether mustard is in the gravy can be two different teams. The Food Standards Agency postcode form is the public route that finds the right team for a complaint about allergen information.
Leeds station is the rail hub. Kirkgate Market and Headingley are in the city. Call 999 for anaphylaxis. NHS lists a 24-hour accident and emergency department at St James’s University Hospital, Beckett Street, LS9 7TF, for ages 18 and over. Leeds General Infirmary, in the centre, is the other major emergency hospital and the site of Leeds Children’s Hospital, so a teenager is not automatically in the right place at St James’s. I could not verify a Leeds allergy support group on a public page. Anaphylaxis UK and Allergy UK cover the UK nationally.
What to ask in Leeds
- What is in the gravy, the Yorkshire pudding and the stuffing, not only the meat?
- Is there mustard powder or mustard seed in the sausage, glaze or dressing?
- What else goes in the fryer?
- Are you sure, or can you ask the person who made it?
- If this was packed for the fridge, can I see the ingredients list?

Questions people ask
Is a Leeds pub roast a simple gluten-free or milk-free meal?
Often it is not. Gravy, Yorkshire puddings, batter and sauces introduce wheat, milk and egg even when the meat is plain. Ask about each part. A kitchen that can describe them is in a position to cook for you. A kitchen that cannot is not.
Why mention staff turnover?
In areas with a lot of student employment, the person taking the order may not know the prep. Allergen information still has to be accurate. The practical step is to ask them to check with whoever made the food, rather than accept a guess.
Does SafePlate list approved restaurants in Leeds?
No. Search returns restaurants, cafes and pubs from OpenStreetMap. Scores appear only when a menu or a visitor note mentions your food. Nothing on this page is a recommendation of a named venue.
Set up your foods before you search. This is not medical advice. Confirm the meal with the kitchen. If you think someone is having anaphylaxis, call 999.
