UK allergen
Fish allergy eating out in the UK
Fish is its own entry in the UK’s 14 allergens, separate from crustaceans and molluscs. A chip-shop fryer, a Caesar dressing and a dash of fish sauce are the checks that catch more meals than the word “fish” on a menu.
Fish sauce and the fryer
A fillet on a menu is easy to refuse. Fish sauce, anchovy in a Caesar dressing, and Worcestershire sauce are how fish enters dishes that never mention it. A “vegetarian” special can pick up fish sauce if the bottle is the house seasoning. Ask directly.
In a chip shop the fryer is usually there to cook battered fish. If you have a fish allergy, that oil is a primary question, not a minor one. Ask whether anything you want is cooked in that fryer. Batter is a gluten question on top, if you also avoid gluten.
Three seafood allergens
Fish, crustaceans and molluscs are separate in the UK 14. Avoiding cod does not legally or practically describe a prawn allergy, and avoiding prawns does not describe anchovy. Put fish on your profile if fish is the problem, and add the other groups only if you need them avoided too.
Stocks travel. A vegetable risotto can be finished with a fish stock, and a soup can carry a splash. Ask about stock when the dish is not described as a fish dish.
Labels and spoken answers
Where fish is an ingredient, the business has to tell you. Natasha’s Law puts a full ingredients list on food packed on the premises before sale, with fish emphasised. A fried meal cooked to order needs the chip shop or the restaurant to say whether the fryer and the sauce are involved.
A hygiene Pass or a 5-out-of-5 rating says the inspection went a certain way. It says nothing about fish in the oil. SafePlate’s allergy score stays unknown until a menu or a note mentions fish.
What to ask about fish
- Is there fish, fish sauce, anchovy or Worcestershire sauce in this dish?
- Is the stock a fish stock?
- Is my food cooked in the same fryer as fish?
- Are crustaceans or molluscs a separate issue I also need you to check?
- Can I see the label if this was packed earlier?
Search with fish on your profile
Add fish, then search. In cities with a lot of chip shops, ask about the fryer before you treat a side of chips as a simple order.
Questions people ask
Is Worcestershire sauce a fish ingredient?
Standard Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies, which are fish. Recipes and brands can vary, so ask what is in the bottle the kitchen uses. Do not assume a brown sauce is fish-free.
Can I eat chips from a fish and chip shop?
Only if you know what else is in the fryer and that answer is acceptable for your allergy. Ask the shop. A separate fryer is a specific claim they can confirm or refuse. SafePlate cannot see their oil.
Does “no seafood” cover fish sauce?
Say fish sauce and anchovy as well. Seafood is a loose word, and a kitchen can think you mean prawns and mussels while still using fish sauce in the dressing.
Set up your foods before you search. This is not medical advice. Confirm the meal with the kitchen. If you think someone is having anaphylaxis, call 999.
