UK allergen
Soya allergy eating out in the UK
Soya is one of the 14 allergens. Soy sauce, miso, tofu and edamame are the obvious forms. A stir-fry sauce and the wok it was cooked in are the checks that decide the meal.
Soy sauce and the wok
Soya beans turn up as soy sauce, miso, tofu, tempeh, edamame, soya flour and textured soya protein. A stir-fry can contain soya in the sauce even when you skipped the tofu. The wok itself holds a film of the previous sauce. If small amounts matter, ask for a clean pan and a sauce you have identified.
Most soy sauces also contain wheat. If you avoid gluten as well as soya, one “no soy sauce” request covers two allergens, and a wheat-free tamari is still soya. Say which of the two you need kept out.
Oil and lecithin are separate questions
“Vegetable oil” in the UK is not a synonym for soya oil. It is often rapeseed or a blend. Ask which oil if the oil itself is something you avoid. Do not refuse every fried dish on a guess, and do not accept every fried dish on a guess either.
Soya lecithin is used as an emulsifier in some foods. Whether a highly refined lecithin is relevant to your allergy is a question for your clinician. If you have been told to avoid it, say lecithin as well as soy sauce, and ask them to look at a label on packaged components.
The 14, including soya
Soya is one of the 14 allergens. Food packed on the premises before you choose it has to emphasise soya in the ingredients list under Natasha’s Law. A cooked-to-order noodle dish needs the kitchen to tell you about the sauce and the pan.
Add soya to your SafePlate profile as its own food. A vegan dish is often built on soya, so a milk-free choice can be a soya-rich choice. The score stays unknown until a menu or a note mentions soya.
What to ask about soya
- Is there soy sauce, miso, tofu, edamame or soya flour in this dish?
- Can it be cooked in a clean wok, without the house soy sauce?
- Does the sauce contain wheat as well, if gluten is also a problem?
- Which oil are you using, if soya oil is something you avoid?
- On a packed product, is soya emphasised in the ingredients?
Search with soya on your profile
Add soya, then search a city. Ask about soy sauce and the wok, and do not read a vegan label as soya-free.
Questions people ask
Is all vegetable oil soya?
No. Ask which oil the kitchen uses. Vegetable oil is a description of a blend or a plant oil, not a reliable name for soya.
Is tamari safe for a soya allergy?
Tamari is a soya product. Some versions are made without wheat, which matters for gluten. It does not make the sauce suitable for a soya allergy.
Why would a vegan meal be a problem?
Vegan cooking often uses tofu, soya milk, soya protein or soy sauce to replace meat and dairy. If you avoid soya, ask what the replacement is made from. Vegan is not an allergen-free claim.
